Mrs. James Martin of Talco, Texas had been suffering with migraine headaches for years, sometimes causing her sickness, forcing her to stay in bed. They came regularly and there was seemingly no cure for her. But someone told her to try barley green and she did. She took a teaspoon in a glass of juice. She became very ill the next day and threw up greenish bile apparently from her liver. After the one day of illness, she returned to normal health and has never had migraine headaches since! Dr. Yoshihide Hagiwara

You may have heard of Dr. Yoshihide Hagiwara, the man behind Barley Green. Dr. Hagiwara is a very prominent doctor, researcher, inventor and scientist in Japan. His nutritional and pharmacological research, ideas and creations have brought Dr. Hagiwara numerous awards, and honors, and his concern about ways to improve the health and well-being of his people has crossed international borders.

Dr. Hagiwara has developed a number of synthetic drugs, including an anti-fungal agent and other compounds which are currently in use and were patented under his name. He relates that about 15 years into his research, he became increasingly aware that most of the synthetic drugs that he developed were primarily for acute conditions, and while they were very effective in alleviating these acute conditions, they did not help to prevent the problems from developing in the first place. He also observed that when treating a patient with a typical synthetic drug, that the condition would usually be improved, but often undesirable side effects would crop up. A good example are the steroid drugs which are used for everything from bee stings to arthritis. You can't stay on steroid drugs forever because they create their own problems and major problems to be sure.

So Dr. Hagiwara decided there has to be a better way. There just HAS to be a better way. And there was....a natural preventive approach which led to more than 13 years of intensive research on over 150 different plants, grains, and grasses. Dr. Hagiwara discovered that barley was not only an excellent source, but one of the richest sources, of all of the broad spectrum of nutrients required by man for growth, repair, and well-being. Barley has been cultivated in China for hundreds of years, and was used in Ancient Greece, Rome, and by the Lake Dwellers of Ancient Switzerland. Despite its medicinal and nutritional qualities, however, barley has been used primarily in this country for the brewing of beer. Fermenting barley results in malt, which in turn is used in brewing.

Dr. Hagiwara's research and efforts to find a natural, organic, nutritional source that would have enzymatic action to counteract aging and disease was recognized by the International Foundation for Preventive Medicine at its second annual Conference on Reversing the Aging Process in November, 1981, in New York. Anti-Aging Enzyme

Almost 500 years ago, the Fountain of Youth symbolized the answer to aging --- the secret elixir of good health. Ponce de Leon unfortunately grew old and died while searching for it. Scientists still haven't found a cure for aging. There is no way to prevent aging from taking place. But, scientists believe they have found a key -- genes that produce an enzyme called Superoxide Dismutase or S.O.D.

It appears S.O.D. is a super scavenger enzyme that ferrets out and destroys the damaging free radicals, chemical byproducts of normal cellular metabolism. Free radicals are highly reactive and unstable, due to their unpaired electron, and will attack any molecule in your body, damaging many of the components of a cell, including DNA. DNA, of course, is the chemical of which genes is composed. When enough DNA is damaged, cells begin to die, contributing to the aging process. There is no cure for aging; nothing can prevent aging from taking place -- but scientists now believe that perhaps S.O.D. delays it. (Science Digest, August 1982)

The pure juice of young barely leaves happens to be one of the richest sources of this anti-aging enzyme S.O.D. The active S.O.D. occupies a part of the total mass of barley juice and is one of the highest of value found among natural sources. (S.O.D. -- Old Enzyme Article)

Current research is doing much to bolster the theory that S.O.D. can actually delay or slow down the aging process. Molecular biologist Kenneth Munkres and his colleagues at the University of Wisconsin examined several strains of the same species of mold and discovered that those that lived the longest were indeed those richest in S.O.D. The implications are intriguing, for if a cell's S.O.D. content can be manipulated, might not life spans be commensurately expanded or extended? (Science Digest, August 1982)

According to the best selling book LIFE EXTENSIONS, by Durk Pearson and Sandy Shaw -- which focuses on all the latest and current theories and discoveries relating to the aging process and prolonging or extending one's life -- a study by Dr. Richard Cutler, a biophysicist at the National Institute of Aging, shows that the life spans of many mammalian species, including man, were found to be directly proportional to the amount of S.O.D. they contain. The animals with the longest spans and man were found to have the highest levels of S.O.D.

If this young green barley juice, one of the richest sources of the anti-aging enzyme S.O.D., can perhaps restore or revitalize our damaged cells, longevity and rejuvenation may be achieved. Radiation and Cancer

It appears that S.O.D. also plays a key role in protection from cancer and radiation therapy. S.O.D.'s chief function in contrast to the other enzymes is as a cell protector. (Best Ways, August 1980)

Dr. Hagiwara in Japan, and biologist Dr. Jasuo Hotta, a specialist of gene engineering at the University of California at La Jolla, found that when barley juice was added to damaged cells, the DNA within the cells repaired itself very quickly. Current theories hold that both cancer and aging result when genes fail to repair themselves. In their experiments, the scientists exposed mouse cells to both radiation and a powerful cancer-causing chemical. Then they divided the cells into two sets, incubated both, and added the barley juice to only one set. The "untreated" cells fared poorly; many died and others began a slow self-repair process. But the cells treated with the barley juice recovered at an accelerated rate -- twice as fast as normal. When the Doctors added barley juice to the mouse cells before subjecting them to radiation and a carcinogen, Hotta says the repair rate was "...easily three times as fast as normal." Thus, Dr. Hagiwara claims, the findings may eventually help to prevent cancer, aging, or both. (Omni, May 1982)

Benzpyrene: 17 years ago, the F.D.A. announced that benzpyrene from cigarettes and tobacco causes lung cancer. However, it was revealed at the Japan Pharmaceutical Society that this "young green barley juice" greatly reduces the risk and neutralizes the poisonous effects of benzpyrene. Black Char: It is well known that the black char in broiled and charcoal grilled meat contains elements which include 20,000 times more cancer-causing elements than that found in benzpyrene from tobacco. However, young green barley juice may help to protect the body from cancer by decomposing these elements. (New York Speech, pg.5)

BHT: In a report made to the Japan Pharmaceutical Society it was revealed that a sort of peroxidase extract from green barley juice powder can counteract the poisonous effect of BHT that is found in powered milk and processed meats. (Let's Live, March, 1982)

Heart Attacks

Researchers in the Department of Medicine at St. Louis University have found that S.O.D. also greatly aids in the maintenance of damaged heart tissue. After a heart attack, cellular energy production is severely lowered. Prevention or delay of irreversible cell damage can be achieved by simply administering enzymes specifically aimed at maintaining the energy supply of the cell. S.O.D. may be one of those enzymes because it increases the efficiency of energy production. (Best Ways, August 1980)

P4 D1

Recently an isolated fraction of green barley juice known as P4 D1 was announced. According to Professor Dr. Jubota of the Tokoyo Science University, this substance suppresses pancreatitis, stomatitis, inflammation of the oral cavity and dermatitis, as well as lacerations of the stomach and duodenum. It is an ideal anti-inflammatory agent and its effects are measurably stronger than steroid and non-steroid drugs. (Nutrition News, September 1982)

Dr. Kubota also reported to the Annual Japan Pharmacy Science Association that the special fraction of green barley juice called P4 D1 produced remarkable stimulation to the repair of DNA in the reproductive cells. Dr. Kubota stated, "No stimulation of DNA repair or promotion of reproductive cell activity has been reported earlier from the use of any natural or synthetic source." This kind of discovery might portend the achievement of a longer life. (Nutrition News, September 1982)
